A poor country

These 2 days we passed through many small villages. The people here live in very poor conditions, in thatched wooden huts with their pigs, chicken and dogs. They all are farmers and practice the "slash and burn" method. This means that they cut a piece of the rainforest, burn the remains and use the ashes a a fertilizer. The next year they move to another piece of forest and do the same there. The former field will be retaken by the forest and after 15 years they can come back and repeat the story. You can see this phenomena when you look at the mountainslopes, clearly you can see patches of land in various stages of regaining by the forest and the fields where they are currently growing their crops. These days the population has grown so much that they cannot keep the 15-year scheme. They re-use the land earlier, the land is not so nutritious as it would have been after 15 years and the gains are lower. They have not enough rice for the whole year and they must rely on other sources. These are the government and aid from NGO’s and foreign countries. It also explains why the roads are so bad and that most new infrastructural projects are funded from abroad. These people have no money, they can not pay taxes. They hardly participate in the economy at all. And so far we have not seen any industry of any size. So a poor government is the consequence. We have no idea what the effects are from the government’s political denomination, communist.
