Lombok wages

From our resort on the beach near Sumbawa Besar we were taken in a bemo (small minibus) back to the ferry port, a 2 hour ride. The minivan was just big enough to hold us and the bikes. We could embark right away and on Lombok we pedalled app. 50 kms  onto the mountain slope to the beautiful place of Tetebatu. There we stayed for 2 days in Hotel Soedjono, a complex of bungalows seated in the garden of a big colonial house from the 1920-s. At the time it was built as a mountain house for mr Soedjono, the first medical doctor on the island. Again we made a guided walk through the rice terraces towards a waterfal and back. It took 6 hours en we met many people harvesting the rice. We even gave a little hand by helping beating the grains out of the plants. Groups of mainly women cut the rice some 30 cms above the ground and then take the bundles towards a dry corner of the field where a large cloth is laid down. There they beat the bundles on a board that is standing more or less upright before their legs. They are hired hands and they do the wortk for the landowner. We were told that they get 2000 Rupiah (16 eurocents) for every 100 kgs of rice they produce this way. Another 1000 Rp for taking the 100 kgs to the factory and those are the earnings for the complete group of app. 10 people. For a whole day (8 hours) working in the rice fields, removing weeds, they get 7000 Rp. per person (56 eurocents). Our guide, who was an employee of the hotel, told us that in the high season, when he will work from dawn till night, he will earn 100.000 Rp. per month. (app. 8,30 Euros). He felt satisfied with it.
