Arles, Wed. Sept. 7th

Odo 1712 kms. The last log was written in Monasque, still in a mountainous environment. At this moment I’m in Arles. This old (Roman, Medieaval) town is situated at the mouth of the river Rhône, just a few kms from the Mediterenean sea. The town is also famous through Vincent van Gogh, who lived and worked here for a certain period. Many of the works that make the Provence heat so vividly visible have been made here. For me it’s extra interesting, since van Gogh was born in the same village as myself. For this reason one of my first holidaytrips abroad I made was to this town and other places where the artist had lived and worked. It was in the year 1967, just qfter I had left the army. I went with a friend in his FIAT 600, a small rucksack with 4 wheels and a tiny engine. Later with Eveline we have been here again, but not very often: summers are too hot here. Yesterday I was in Aix en Provence, a bigger city, but very nice and old too. Nicer even. I saw the big Cézanne exposition there. It was crowded, but worthwhile. The weqther has become cooler, since the sun is invisible. The least effort makes me sweat unagreeable heavy though. Have to take my cycling gear with me into the shower every time.
