Our Vuelta de Colombia, stats

We just finished a Tour de Colombia. Started in Bogotà, went north to the Caribean coast and returned south via Medellin as far as Popayan. There we turned back north towards Cali, in which city we finished our cycling tour through this wonderful country with its lovely people.

We cycled 2800 kilometers, in 40 stages. Average 70 kms a day. We cycled 2 of every 3 days of our stay in Colombia.

From every stage there is a report with details and special information in this weblog. To be found in Archieven (left column), the first one on January 5th of 2010.

Each stage has been track-logged and saved in these reports as a .gpx-file. These files can be downloaded and saved on your own computer. The files can be opened f.i. in Google Earth. Of course you can load them into your own gps-device and ride the same track yourself 🙂

The tour can be chracterised by two words: mountains and heat. We climbed an awful lot and especially the northern plains were stinking hot. So if you want to cycle here you should be aware of this. But the country is so beautiful and the people are so nice, maybe the friendliest on the planet, that it is very worth while to come and do it. We had a tremendous time here.

We measured our altimeters (meters climbed) by a Garmin Colorada 300 gps-device. This device gave confusing information. When I calculated meters climbed myself based on altitudes given by the gps I noticed that the readings of meters climbed given by the gps itself were lower than my own calculations. Mostly some 20% less.  Moreover, some stages we rode were the same as those of Aaldrik and Sonja, a Dutch-Australian couple (www.tour.tk ) . Their report on altimeters were always higher than the readings of our gps. So we have reasons to conclude that our readings are too low.

Our altimeters:

– from Bogotà at alt. 2600 down to the coast we climbed 7312 meters

– my estimation is that it is more correct to consider this to be 9150 altimeters

– from the coast to Popayan and back to Cali the gps-reading was 13430

– more correct would be 16800

– the total meters climbed on the whole tour given by gps is 20742 meters

– it’s my estimation that a more correct number might be close to 26000 meters.
